What’s The Harm In Santa Claus?

Many parents think that their kids should not believe there is a Santa Claus. Among the reasons is when they find out, they are disappointed and may no longer believe anything their parents say again. Another is that it may be harder for them to hold onto a belief in God. Myself, I’ve done it both ways. I had a lot of kids, so had some to experiment with–not intentionally, but I think it turned out that way. My first biological three I allowed to believe in Santa, while the fourth, I did not encourage in that direction at all. It turns out that they all four continued believing what I had to say and they all still believed in God. My view is that if handled as a fun idea and they learn the spirit of Christmas, along with some history on the subject, things should turn out well either way. Giving of oneself and sharing love with others is the important lesson here, along with the messages of Faith, Hope, and Charity. Have a Blessed and Peaceful Christmas!

Happy Halloween (or not)

Here it is that time of year again when the ghosts and goblins come out for candy treats, standing with open bags and pumpkins at our doorways. Regardless of how you feel about the tradition of Halloween, it is really hard to resist joining in the fun and sharing chocolate, smarties, popcorn balls, and apples with those sweet little multi-colored and and masked faces in our neighborhoods. I think it is a great time to teach kids about another one of the most celebrated fun times in our society and give them the truth about where it came from and why many people celebrate it still today. Here is a good site that appears to be informed and positive that may help in this another teachable moment in your child’s life: http://www.halloween-website.com/history.htm
